Getting a Taste of the Apocalypse Here in Boston Posted: 03 May 2010 06:31 AM PDT Boston and 29 other nearby communities have no clean drinking water due to the rupture of an enormous pipe somewhere in the public water system. We can take showers but we must boil all other water if we are going to use it to drink, prepare food, brush teeth, etc. We are supposed to regard our tap water right now as “untreated pond water” with threats of E. Coli and giardia. It’s interesting to see how quickly one can adapt. I thought, well, I’m not going to use my precious, boiled water to rinse lettuce leaves, so I stopped eating salad. I made a few meals at home (I felt it was a lot safer than eating out) but then I had to figure out how to wash all the dishes. Then I went out and got some canned food: chili and stuff like that. Today, instead of having my usual soup for lunch, I brought leftovers from last night’s dinner — something I would never normally do. A lot of people are buying bottled water rather than boiling their tap water. I sure hope this does not lead everyone back to the belief that bottled water is superior to tap water. Remember, a lot of bottled water IS tap water. Don’t be duped! Anyway, I heard this morning that the Boil Water Order may soon be lifted. |
