Posted: 04 May 2010 11:10 AM PDT If you’ve ever worked in an office you will know exactly what I’m talking about: Someone brings in a bunch of candy left over from the latest holiday or an edible something they don’t want to keep at home so that they’re not tempted to eat it, and it gets scarfed in 2 minutes flat. Today, for example, I ate a shortbread cookie I found in a box in the office kitchenette. Delicious and buttery, but something I would never, ever eat at home. Here’s my explanation for this phenomenon: People in offices exist eight hours a day under artificial lighting, in clothing one might never wear except to work, and doing things that may or may not contribute meaning to their lives. So they eat to experience a quick hit of joy? diversion? subversion? what? Opinions, please. |
