My Friends in Japan: Without Passports, They Must Stay Put

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 09:14 AM PDT

I heard from my friends in Japan today. As you may recall, they fled Fukushima without time to even stop at their home to pick up anything. Here is what they wrote today:

Thank you so much for your messages. Your messages have been of tremendous support for us. Despite all your kind and helpful information, I am for now giving up to get our passports. The friend who stays in Fukushima…say that it is impossible for him to find small passports in the messed up room. I am not sure for myself that I should return to Fukushima for a short time to find them by myself, with so bad radiation exposure there. S. and I began for now to find a place to resettle in Japan, like a place to stay for a year and consider what we should do. I think of Okinawa as a good candidate, where we are as far as possible from Fukushima within Japan. S. thinks of some places in Kyusyu Island.

A good lesson here. Perhaps we should never leave the house without our passports.
