If you are unfamiliar with the concept, Groupon (and similar copycat companies) sends an email out each day featuring one great deal at a local business. It is always a very deep discount, so it’s highly appealing. So instead of 10 percent off at a local wine bar, it’s like 50 percent off. They can afford to do this because so many people sign up for the deals, hence the name GROUPon. When I first heard of Groupon it was one of those ideas that first appeared odd to me. I thought, is this really going to work? But sure enough, it does. It works so well that Groupon Inc. reported sales of $760 million in 2010. Another thing I love about the group buying concept is that it is a real boon to small businesses that are doing a great job but have been overlooked. In fact, often these places get such an overwhelming response and new influx of customers that they can hardly keep up. Some of the Groupons I’ve purchased:
