Food Security: The Next Big Thing

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 07:09 AM PST

Wheat crops are failing around globe. Australian farmers are desperate.  Honeybees are disappearing. Today, I learned about Colombian coffee withering in the heat. From the New York Times story:

…In the last few years, coffee yields have plummeted here and in many of Latin America's other premier coffee regions as a result of rising temperatures and more intense and unpredictable rains, phenomena that many scientists link partly to global warming. Coffee plants require the right mix of temperature, rainfall and spells of dryness for beans to ripen properly and maintain their taste. Coffee pests thrive in the warmer, wetter weather.

I recently attended a talk on the topic of food security, and up until that night, I’d never paid attention to the term ‘food security’. Now that I am familiar with it, I see it everywhere. Here’s one solution: grow your own food, as much as possible. I am speaking as a city dweller. I have no land right now to grow anything. But the next place I live will definitely have food-growing space. That’s how seriously I take the issue of food security. If there is any way you can get or share a bit of land, do it. Now.
