Why Can’t We Be More Like the French? Posted: 21 Oct 2010 11:19 AM PDT Many people in France are objecting to the government’s plan to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62 and full pension payments from 65 to 67. Why are French citizens striking? Because they are accustomed to living in a culture that values people, a culture that provides citizens with social benefits like ample time off (vacation, maternity leave, etc.); higher education that is basically free; a health care system that reimburses users in less than two weeks for about 70 percent of the cost; and other amenities that are unimaginable to us. The people in France are striking because they have self-respect. Something we sorely lack here. We, my fellow Americans, are saps. We are wage slaves and debt slaves who settle for lives full of worry, financial strife, and illness. As an illustration, here’s a comment I saw over on the CNN website concerning the strikers.
What are you saying, Frankie? That the French should strive for a broken, inhumane system like the one we have in America? Can’t we dream bigger, people? |
