Patti Smith’s Memoir ‘Just Kids’ Rocks Posted: 14 Oct 2010 07:36 AM PDT Although I was never a fan of Patti Smith’s music, I was intrigued when I heard about her new memoir, Just Kids, which illuminates a period of her young life when she met Robert Mapplethorpe. Their lives were intertwined for a very important time in their youth. As we now know, both became megastars — she in the world of music, he in art. Smith is 63; Mapplethorpe succumbed to AIDS in 1989. The book was a very good read, and I was left with a feeling of how amazing it is that two strangers can meet and become absolutely vital to someone else, and how love can transcend an awful lot of difficult stuff. I really admired Smith after reading this book. In fact, I went online to watch some videos of her singing. Her book was just nominated for a National Book Award in nonfiction. Patti Smith sings one of her hits, Because the Night And here is Patti Smith reading from her book |
