Do You Believe in Arranged Marriages? Posted: 19 Oct 2010 11:38 AM PDT Apropos of absolutely nothing, I have been thinking about arranged marriages. I met a couple recently from Asia and they are in an arranged marriage of many years’ standing and have two young sons. When I asked the male half of the couple about the marriage, he seemed not to be terribly happy with the situation. Resigned to it, but not happy. On the other hand, I know someone whose Indian parents have an arranged marriage, and although it was not a match made in heaven at the outset, the two have grown to love each other. Not sure of the depth of the love, or if it is romantic or not, but there you have it. When I hear about couples in the U.S. breaking up after long — or short — relationships, I always wonder if arranged marriages have about as much a chance of working out positively as marriages in which you actually choose the person you couple up with. And you? What do you think? |
