Posted: 26 Oct 2010 08:33 AM PDT by Eileen Marcus If you're an employed boomer, count your lucky dollars. Sunday's (October 24, 2010) 60 minutes segment on the unemployed Silicone Valley 99ers was a heart stopper. The 99ers are people whose 99 weeks of unemployment benefits have run out. They are in their 40's, 50's, 60's; singles, married and families with college age kids and even younger. They are losing their homes, their savings, their dignity and they are desperate. We're hearing a lot about change in this upcoming election. But what about the kind of change many boomers are facing right now: the tragedy of long term unemployment. According to 60 minutes correspondent Scott Pelly, not since the recession have we seen a similar slowdown in growth and subsequent job loss. This isn't a political blog so no recommendations from our end; just a reminder to vote your conscience and remember the 99ers. No telling when that could be you. |
