The Boomer 99ers

If you're an employed boomer, count your lucky dollars. Sunday's (October 24, 2010) 60 minutes segment on the unemployed Silicone Valley 99ers was a heart stopper. The 99ers are people whose 99 weeks of unemployment benefits have run out. They are in their 40's, 50's, 60's; singles, married and families with college age kids and even younger. They are losing their homes, their savings, their dignity and they are desperate.

Of California's unemployed total, 22% are boomers with little hope of finding work. One former engineer is happy to finally get a sales floor job … with Target. Another former analyst is living in a friend's brother's bonus room; and another rummaging in trash bins for food. One food bank has gone from several thousand bags of food distributed to over 32,000 with many of those former mid to upper level executives.

We're hearing a lot about change in this upcoming election. But what about the kind of change many boomers are facing right now: the tragedy of long term unemployment. According to 60 minutes correspondent Scott Pelly, not since the recession have we seen a similar slowdown in growth and subsequent job loss. This isn't a political blog so no recommendations from our end; just a reminder to vote your conscience and remember the 99ers. No telling when that could be you.
