A Freaky Social Networking Experience

Posted: 25 Jan 2011 08:33 AM PST

I was browsing through my Facebook friends’ updates recently and read about a young woman I know. She wrote about how she was going to stick to a new year’s resolution and venture out into the snowy night to go to a yoga class. First, to say I know her is a bit of a stretch. She lives in my neighborhood and I sometimes see her at events and I’ve spoken to her a few times. So we’re Facebook friends, but not friends in real life. In fact, this woman probably doesn’t even recall Friending me.

Anyway, later that day I came home on the subway and was walking up the street when I spotted this Facebook Friend coming toward me. I was about to exclaim, “Have a great yoga class,” but I thought it would freak her out. She might say to herself, How would she know anything about me? We hardly know each other, and it would take time for her to put two-and-two together. I decided not to say anything.

Social networking is like a parallel universe. Sometimes I love it because it allows me to keep up with more people than I have time to call or email. On the other hand, it’s weird when I know something about someone and they haven’t personally told me. I participate in Facebook, Twitter, blogging (obviously) but still find it freaky at times.
