How the World Will End — According to This Guy

Have you seen the documentary film Collapse? It was released this week to DVD and I got my hands on a copy and watched it. It’s basically an 80-minute interview with a guy named Michael Ruppert, a smart, articulate man who has been described as a former police officer turned independent reporter who predicted the current financial crisis in his self-published newsletter, From the Wilderness. Director Chris Smith keeps the camera trained on Ruppert almost the whole time, except for some old footage interlaced here and there. He talks about peak oil and how everything on earth will collapse like a house of cards. “An intellectual horror movie” is what Variety magazine calls Collapse. Some people dismiss Ruppert as a conspiracy theorist or a nut. I actually agree with the guy. Here are a few choice ideas of Ruppert’s:

  • All 7 billion people exist on this planet because of oil
  • The insolvency of the federal government is coming
  • Everything is going to break down
  • Evolve, or perish
  • Infinite growth is not possible; nothing grows forever
  • In 2006  I issued a whole series of warnings. Get out of debt, check your mortage
  • The whole economy is a pyramid scheme
  • Cell phone service will break down, so a land line is a good idea
  • You will need a moderate fresh water supply
  • Unlike the Great Depression, we don’t have infinite resources left to tap
  • Store good, organic seeds
  • Community is what will save us; you will survive as a member of a tribe or a family

He’s written a book called Confronting Collapse: The Crisis of Energy and Money in a Post Peak Oil World, which, from the sound of it, is more hopeful. And here’s a trailer for the film Collapse.
