Do You Own Any of These Silly Devices? (with photos)

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 06:48 AM PST

It was garbage day today in my neighborhood, so while I was walking my pup this morning, I spied something in someone’s trash that caught my eye: two cardboard boxes that came with recently purchased towel warmers. Yes, this is a device that keeps your towels warm just for that brief moment each day when you finish your shower and reach for a towel. Nuts, huh? How much energy is consumed by this silly device? Well, I’ve been known to purchase dumb stuff, too. You know those Walter Drake catalogs, stocked with things that you know you could use but can’t believe anyone really invented? I took a look (hey, the catalog’s online now) and here’s a selection of the stuff you can’t live without:

a tiny pair of tongs to retrieve your bread from the toaster

a breading set (a tray with 3 compartments for putting the egg, bread crumbs and flour into; OK, I have to admit, this would be pretty handy; see photo below)

a bacon press (yep, it does just what it says; it’s a weight that sits on your bacon while it cooks; you don’t want unsightly curly bacon, do you!?)

mini microwave oven mitts

a pineapple slicer (yep, a slicer made just for pineapples, so you can use it the two times per year you actually purchase fresh pineapple)

We deserve to run out of fossil fuel the way we’ve been squandering it manufacturing and buying silly stuff.
