I could write about how we are poised to run out of easy-to-extract fossil fuel. I could write about the crashing U.S. economy. But no. I opt today to do some navel-gazing. I am going to write today about my favorite iPhone applications. Since I just marked my one-year iPhone anniversary, here are my time-tested, favorite apps (not in any particular order): - Netflix — I can watch movies on my iPhone using the free, Instant Movie choices. Really cool way to kill time.
- The Weather Channel — Not sexy, but I check it just about every day. You can get hourly weather, 10 days of forecasts, extreme weather warnings, and more.
- Words with Friends — Use this app to play Scrabble either with friends or a random player they match you up with. The cool thing is, you play only when you want to. You can make a move and then not return to the app for days, and continue the game then.
- Dictionary! — Very handy, fast and easy-to-use dictionary that has a surprisingly large number of words and definitions.
- IWant — Choose the category (anything from restaurants to libraries to golf courses) and this app will list for you the closest locations, contact info, and directions.
- AroundMe — Very similar to IWant, but it’s worth having both apps.
- Trail Behind — Like to walk or hike? No matter where you are (even the middle of a city), you can find places to stretch your legs.
- Trailhead — Very similar to Trail Behind.
- QuickTip — For the mathematically challenged, this app calculates tips.
- Miss Spell — A spelling bee game.
- BubbleXplode — A game where you can break bubbles
- This American Life — This app makes available every episode of this popular radio program. Great for long trips.
- Touch Hockey — Great, fun, realistic air hockey game.
- 7.0MPX Camera — A nice camera app.
- Jeopardy! — A great way to get your Jeopardy fix. It even has the real Jeopardy music!
