Your Social Security Card is Lost, Now What?

Post image for Your Social Security Card is Lost, Now What?

Having your social security card lost or stolen can be a frightening experience. After all, every piece of our human existence is tied to that nine digit number. Most of the time, if you have your social security number memorized or written down, the card is not needed. There is no law requiring one to have an actual social security card. But what happens when it is needed, say for applying for a drivers license or passport, and you do not have the card anymore? Getting a replacement card is not as daunting a task as you might think.

Where to Start on Finding Social Security Card

To begin, you will need to fill out an application for a new social security card. Applications are available at your local social security office. The application can also be printed from the social security website by visiting www.ssa.gov. The link for replacing a social security card is on the left side of the page under the "more information" heading. By clicking that link, it will take you to the page with instructions for applying for a new card, and the link for the printable Application for a Social Security Card (form SS-5).

Supporting Documents

Once you have completed the application for a social security card, you will need to gather some information about yourself. There are two required pieces of information that you must prove in order to apply for a new card. The first bit of information required is to prove your identity, and the second is to prove your US Citizenship.

Identity Information

In order to prove your identity you must show a document that includes specific information about yourself. The information needed is your name, age or birth date, and a photo. The document must be current. Some examples of acceptable documentation include: drivers license, non-drivers id card, or passport. Whatever you choose to use, must be the original documents. Copies are not accepted.

Citizenship Information

The second bit of information you need to provide is something to show that you are a US citizen and therefore able to apply for a social security card. Acceptable documents include but are not limited to, a US passport, a US birth certificate, or a certificate of citizenship. For a full list of acceptable documentation, you can visit the website at www.ssa.gov or contact your local social security office. Again, whichever form of identification you provide, must be the original, not a copy.

How to Apply For a New Social Security Card

Once you have filled out the required application and found all of the necessary documents, you can now apply for a new social security card. This can be done in one of two ways. One, visit your local social security office and apply in person. Two, mail all of your documents and application to your local social security office. Any documents you send, will be mailed back to you once verified.

To find your local social security office, again visit www.ssa.gov and click on the link to find your local office. Enter your zip code and the closest office will be displayed.

Once everything is approved, you can expect to receive your new card in about two weeks.

I Want to Have a Job. I Don’t Want to Marry You.

Posted: 25 Feb 2011 08:44 AM PST

She’s cute, she’s opinionated. She won’t marry you. She want’s a job first.
She’s been autotuned… one of the times the remix is better than the original.

UPDATE: Here is the story: I am an 11 year old singer/songwriter and had been asked to go on national television to sing one of my original songs about a year and a half ago. My little 5 year old sister (she’s six now) was upset and feeling left out because her big sister was doing all these fun and interesting things. This 1 minute clip is part of a 15 minute video where she discusses her views on life and decides she isn’t going to let anything come between her and her goals.

Here’s the original “I Don’t Want To Marry You.”

Annnnnd… the remix…

This Weeks Good Reads-Week Seventy-seven

Posted: 25 Feb 2011 03:30 AM PST

coffee cupEvery week I come across an article or two that I find very helpful to me as a Baby Boomer and think may be of some interest to you, the community, as well.

They may be from an online news source, another Blog or Website or something I found surfing around the Internet. They could even be something that was sent in by a reader of the Blog or a member of the Baby Boomer’s Forum.

Enjoy!

Retiring Boomers Find 401(k) Plans Coming Up Short by E S Browning… If you are one of the many Baby Boomers who believed all the hype when the government ‘allowed’ us to contribute to a 401(k) plan for your retirement, this may serve as a wake up call for the reality that will soon be your retirement. That plan wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, you should save all you can while you still can.

The nest-egg myth by Susan Jacoby… In the same vein as the previous article, there are a lot more financial worries for our future retirement. Medicare, Social Security, that 401(k) plan not to mention that house you thought was worth at least what you paid for it. The future is looking pretty bleak for quite a few of us who thought we had planned well for our retirement. Ha!

I  hope you found this weeks choice(s) helpful and enjoyable. What did you think? Do you have any suggestions for next week?

Not All Who Wander

Posted: 25 Feb 2011 04:28 AM PST

Not All Who Wander are Lost

There is a group of women who walk through our neighborhood bright and early every morning. SuperGuy asked me why I don’t join up with them when they get to our house. You know? I like to walk alone. Lost in my thoughts. Occasionally I’ll listen to music while I walk, but more often I just walk with my thoughts to keep me company. It’s amazing how often I’ll sort things out that have been bothering me while I walk.  How about you? Are you a lone walker or do you prefer to join with others and chat while you walk?
