It’s about a group of women who were the first female miners to work in a Minnesota mine, and the unbelievable abuse they took from some of their male co-workers. The film North Country was based on this story. The book, written in 2003, reads like a thriller and is extraordinarily well researched and written. The Night Watch (2006) is a novel by Sarah Waters (Tipping the Velvet) that gives the reader an incredibly authentic feeling for World War II London. The story follows the lives of a cast of women characters — three lesbians, one straight woman and one man. The novel was shortlisted for the 2006 Man Booker Prize and longlisted for the 2006 Orange Prize. Are You Somebody?: The Accidental Memoir of a Dublin Woman (1999) is a memoir by Nuala O’Faolain, who had an incredibly dismal childhood and writes about without hesitation or censoring. But the book is not just about her childhood; it’s actually an account of her adult life in England and Ireland and how her childhood shaped it. The writing is several cuts above your average memoir. Sadly, O’Faolain died a couple of years ago at age 68. |
