Worried About all the Earthquakes Lately? Posted: 24 Aug 2011 08:13 AM PDT There was one in Virginia, one in Colorado and one in the San Francisco area — all within a few days. I’m not going to go all apocalyptic on you, but doesn’t this seem like a bit too much earthquake activity for one tectonic plate? By the way, here’s what a tectonic plates are: The crust of Earth is cracked into seven large and many other smaller slabs of rock called plates, averaging about 50 miles thick. As they move (only inches per year), and depending on the direction of that movement, they collide, forming deep ocean trenches, mountains, volcanoes, and generating earthquakes. My part of the world, Boston, Massachusetts, doesn’t know from earthquake activity. So when my office building shook yesterday, everyone was a little perturbed. |
