Slouching Towards Autumn

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 06:05 AM PDT

Summer weather makes the whole word open up here in New England. For me, I feel more relaxed, happy, and open than at any other time of year. You can go outside without anything more than shorts and a T-shirt. And people here actually seem friendlier. I know I am.

But when the crickets start to chirp in late summer and the nights begin to cool, I mourn summer and slowly slouch towards autumn. Sure, once fall gets here I enjoy it, but I am so sad for the closing down of public spaces: fewer people venture out, and when we do we are covered in heavy clothes. We literally go into hiding.

I often think about moving elsewhere, a place where winters aren’t as harsh as they are in Boston. The fact that always stops me is that I have such a great community here of friends and acquaintances. I was talking with a friend over the weekend and she is thinking about spending half the year here and half the year elsewhere. And she isn’t wealthy, someone who can afford two homes, but she thinks she can make it work. I am trying to figure out if I could do the same.
