World Collapse is Foreshadowed by Tampons and Ginger

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 05:05 AM PDT

The world is changing, and not in a good way.

Several enormous problems are converging, which will result in a Perfect Storm of chaos: economic collapse, fossil fuel scarcity, and global climate change. Just as rising food prices and food shortages have resulted in riots abroad, the U.S. will experience this, too, at some point.

So what’s tampons and ginger have to do with it? I went to a CVS sometime in late 2010 to buy O.B. tampons. There were none on the shelf. That was fine, I would go back in a few days and they would be restocked. Well, I went back, and the shelf was still empty. For months, I looked for them, but no dice. All of late 2010 and into 2011 O.B. tampons had vanished. Then I went online and was dismayed to learn that it was not a local problem. There was a total shortage everywhere. As a spoiled, modern American, I was unaccustomed to products disappearing. I mean, it wasn’t World War II or anything, when necessities were rationed. Then, a few months ago, I went to Trader Joe’s for my candied ginger. No bags on the shelves. I talked to an employee, who said the ginger would be back in a week. I went again, a week later. No dice. Then I went back week after week. Nothing. I visited friends in New York City and visited a Trader Joe’s there. Nope, no ginger. To this day, I don’t see this product on the shelves. Again, when was the last time you remembered a product being unavailable? There is not a lot of information out there as to why these two products became unavailable. But take them as an omen, a foreshadowing of things to come.

Transporting products to market is accomplished with the use of cheap fossil fuels. As we reach peak oil, more and more products will disappear from the shelves. I am not trying to be a downer; I just want you to be prepared. Here are a few resources you can use to learn more.

How far is the U.S. from food shortages and riots?

Read The Long Emergency by James Howard Kuntsler.

Transition Towns are community-led responses to climate change and shrinking supplies of cheap energy, building resilience and happiness.

Definition of Peak Oil: There is a limited amount of oil that we can extract from the Earth. Peak oil refers to the point at which the supply of that oil is at its limit. After this point, oil supply will begin to decline. Economists have a variety of predictions as to when peak oil will occur. Some say the peak will be reached in the next ten to twenty years, while others argue it has already passed.
