My Strange Cold-Water Experiment

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 01:38 PM PDT

So the hot water went out at my apartment the other day, and although I can relight pilot lights with the best of ‘em, I thought it prudent to let the owner of the building do it. Thing is, I didn’t know he was away on a long weekend. So, I thought, well, here’s an opportunity to see what it’s like to go without hot water. After all, millions of people around the world do that every single day. So for the past three or four days I’ve used cold water. As you might surmise, showering was the least pleasant event. Even though it’s summer and pretty warm, a cold shower is pretty tough to take. And I hate to think how difficult this would be in the winter.

But here’s the thing. Each day, it got easier. I learned how to wash up fast and I am sure I saved gallons and gallons of water, as I couldn’t stand the temperature for long. I think the hot water is back on today.

Lessons learned: I can handle cold-water showers and cold-water dish washing, if I have to. It’s a great way to save water, which is a good thing, because one of the coming crises the world faces is a fresh water shortage.
