The Great Gender Divide Over Oprah Winfrey Posted: 26 May 2011 08:14 AM PDT There seems to be a great gender divide over who’s an Oprah Winfrey fan, and who’s not. There are women who live by Oprah’s words, and will sorely miss the regular presence of Oprah on TV. Some have even called the shuttering of Oprah’s show as the ‘end of an era’. I watched the Oprah Winfrey show maybe six times in 25 years, so I can’t say I’m a huge fan, but that doesn’t mean I will put her down like much of the media is doing. She has shone a light on sexual abuse, on being compassionate toward others, on increasing literacy and love of books. So what, if she believes in “The Secret” and Dr. Phil? If male sports fans can stand around the water cooler, day after day, crapping on about so-and-so’s defense, or who got traded to the Sox, and regard Super Bowl Sunday as a national holiday, then dammit, women can rally around the end of Oprah Winfrey show. |
