Renewing My Passport

Posted: 25 Oct 2011 06:30 AM PDT

I glanced at my passport the other day and found that it had expired in September. I don’t do a heckuva lot of international travel but I thought it’s probably a good idea to keep a valid passport around. Before I renewed it today I flipped through the pages and reminisced about trips gone by:

  • St. Vincent in the Caribbean, part of a disastrous sailing trip that included mutinous sailing mates, a nasty captain, and unending seasickness. But also quiet, out-of-the-way islands that were so rustic that the street signs were hand lettered!
  • Iceland in the fall. Great seafood, blondes, rugged landscapes, geysers, and community centers in each town.
  • Tokyo, Japan, a place that will always be dear to me. What a trip. The fish market at dawn, the peaceful inn where we sat on the floor and ate all manner of beautifully presented delicacies, the crazy energy of the city, Mount Fuji.
  • Amsterdam with a couple of friends. It was winter and rainy and I didn’t get to see the Anne Frank House, something I will always regret, but I loved the cafe and biking culture there (I recall seeing an elderly woman in a fur coat pedaling down the street) and the canals.
