Is your makeup routine still straight out of the sixties? Even Twiggy has given up her spiky lashes and cavernous cheeks for a new look. Now that you're almost in YOUR sixties, remember that your skin texture is changing and you need to keep up with the times. Keeping current will keep you looking fresh. There are styles in makeup, just like in any other part of the fashion and beauty industries, but with boomer women, we have to be extra prudent with our beauty care. Here are some important things to remember when you put on your makeup in the morning.
Do's for the perfectly made-up (over 50) face:
- You've heard it before – Drink lots of water and eat right.
- Always moisturize with products that contain tightening and firming agents.
- Choose colors that look natural against your own skin tone.
- Always use blush. Smile and then apply it to the “apples” of your cheeks rather than to your cheekbones. Blend it in well. You don't want two bright, clownish, spots on your face.
- Choose moisture based formulas and products that look moist rather than either too dry or too shimmery or glossy.
- Use a luminizing primer. These primers not only set down a base for your foundation to cling to, but they give your face the dewy glow that aging has stolen.
- Use mascara. It highlights your eyes. And curl your lashes. This opens your eyes.
- Use brow color if your brows have thinned, which is often the case “after a certain age.”
- Highlighting color can be used as a lift. A little bit above and below the brow, a little on the top of your cheekbone, and a tiny bit on our upper lip to make it look fuller.
- Eyeliner? Some say never to use it over 50. Some say to only use it on your upper lid (mascara as well.) I say use it on the lower lid if you like, but not on both lids, and don't go overboard. The preference seems to be use a smudged line in a color that compliments your skin and eye color and to use it on the top lid. The lighter color keeps your eyes looking open.
- Invest in a couple of good brushes. Whatever makeup you use will look better if applied with the right tool.
Don'ts:
- Lip liner can be aging. If you can't live without it use a neutral tone and stay within the line of your lips.
- Very subtle rose or coral lipsticks and glosses are probably going to age you. Use a glossy lipstick that has some color, not just gloss.
- Don't use too much foundation. No matter how it's advertised, it often highlights what we don't want highlighted – those fine lines and not-so-fine wrinkles. Maybe you just need it on red spots or highly pigmented areas. Or maybe you can get away with one of the new tinted moisturizers.
- Don't use eye shadow that's too brightly colored and don't use too much of any eye shadow. Neutrals in moisturizing formulas look beautiful. And a little shimmer is fine.
And don't forget to think beyond your chin! As we age our neck and jawline tend to sag, get fleshy, wrinkly, and crepe-y. Contouring color (a couple of shades darker than your foundation color) brushed down the neck a little can “take away” a little of the fullness there and de-emphasize the neck.
Your face is usually the first thing that other people notice about you. Makeup is a simple way to update your look. When someone says you look “ten years younger,” you'll know why!
