Ensure A Rewarding Retirement

Posted: 30 Oct 2011 03:55 AM PDT

This is a Guest Post by Amy Shoemaker Outreach Coordinator for the National Association to Stop Nursing Home Abuse. If you would like to Guest Post for Baby Boomers US, check out our Guest Post for Us page.

Hey Baby Boomers, you've worked for 50 plus years, it's your turn to retire! Retirement is something people look forward to from the time they begin working. You told people all about your grand plans while spending 40 plus hours a week at work or being a stay-at-home-parent. Now get to it. Below are things you should do once you retire to ensure that your future is one laden with health and happiness:

1. Plan, plan, plan!

You have time, now plan your future. Know where you will be in your golden years. Talk to your family members and decide whether you will live with a one of them or go to an assisted living home if a problem arises. It seems grim, but research nursing homes. Nursing homes can have problems and you need to make sure that if things come to that, you're in a facility that will provide you with good care. You should also update your will regularly, visit an estate planner, and plan your yearly budget.

2. Do all of the things you meant to do 20 years ago

Now that the boring stuff is out of the way, we can get to the fun stuff. Retirement means you have time to do all of the things you were forced to push aside during your working days. In addition to these activities being fun, they are a great way to stay as physically and mentally active as possible. Enjoy your hobbies, begin new ones, and visit the people you love:

  • Read.
  • Write.
  • Start a small business or charity.
  • Learn a new language.
  • Garden.
  • Increase your physical activity! Join a community gym or better your golf swing.
  • Learn to play an instrument you've always wanted to.
  • Spend quality time with your kids, grandchildren, and friends.
  • Get things done around the house you were forced to ignore; that time-consuming home remodel just became possible.
  • Move somewhere you've always wanted to live.
  • Travel, travel, travel. Make a list of all the places you'd love to see and start checking those places off! Eat pizza in Italy, see the pyramids in Egypt, go to the Grand Canyon, see the Mayan ruins… the sky truly is the limit.
  • Take classes at a community college to further your education.

Worth noting for those who love both travel and education is Roadscholar.com. It is website of programs run by Elder Hostel, a non-profit, that allows those over the age of 55 opportunities to travel and study abroad, or take part in classroom learning.

3. Work part-time

A part-time job is a great way to stay active and make some extra cash for your travels and hobbies. It is perfect because although it is a job, you still have time to do many of the things you love. Part-time teaching jobs are a great way to share your experience and expertise with others. Other great retirement jobs are:

  • Consulting work.
  • Part-time work in your previous field.
  • Seasonal work in places you love, like your favorite clothing store or sports team stadium.

4. Volunteer

This is your chance to give back. Think about how your skills can aid the groups that advocate the issues closest to you. Volunteering is great because you can do it as much or as little as you want, and you get the chance to do exciting work and meet interesting people. There are numerous volunteer matching websites to aid you in your search, like VolunteerMatch.com.

This Weeks Good Reads-Week One Hundred-twelve

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 04:09 AM PDT

coffee cupEvery week I come across an article or two that I find very helpful to me as a Baby Boomer and think may be of some interest to you, the community, as well.

They may be from an online news source, another Blog or Website or something I found surfing around the Internet. They could even be something that was sent in by a reader of the Blog or a member of the Baby Boomer’s Forum.

Enjoy!

A Baby Boomer’s Well-Intentioned Plan for Growing Old Tastefully by Susan Spillman… Still got your leisure suit? Your clogs? Bell-bottoms? Do you dare still wear them in public? How do you intend to grow old with taste and dignity?

Boomer turned off by fluffy morning  news shows by Kathleen Norton… What is the first thing you want in the morning, besides coffee? The NEWS, not what passes as news these days. Is there really any news programs for Adults to see in the morning? A humorous look at todays morning news.

I  hope you found this weeks choice(s) helpful and enjoyable. What did you think? Do you have any suggestions for next week?

How Much Dough Do I Spend on My Dog?

Posted: 27 Oct 2011 06:59 AM PDT

Last night, I took my Canine Prince (he’s the one in the red outfit) to the Howl-o-ween costume party for dogs at Fenway Bark, a high-end daycare/kennel in Boston. Below are two other canine party guests, and here are pics of other canines in costumes. This place is so fancy that some of the dog accommodations actually include high-def computer monitors with Skype. You can actually Skype your dog while you’re away. I had my boy stay at Fenway Bark a few weeks ago, but we got the cheapest accommodations. It was still really nice.

I have been convinced for the past couple of years that I spend too much dough on my dog. His food is organic ($36/bag), his treats are organic ($2.99/ounce), his grooming runs about $60 every six weeks, and so on. Am I crazy? Maybe. But I don’t want to feed him cheap food, just in case the  specter of tainted food rises again. Somehow the Alpo that I fed my childhood dog is not good enough for my boy.
