Single? You’re in Excellent Company

A story in today’s New York Times on being single is drawing a lot of attention. Being single can be the source of anxiety and shame for a lot of people. But guess what? Nearly 100 million adults are single in the United States. It’s no minority, that’s for sure! The story basically lays out the very ordinariness of being single in our culture. The comments are priceless. Here’s an example:

I’m over 60. Been divorced twice. Been single for 14-15 years now. My married friends ask, “Don’t you ever get lonely?” I answer, “Of course — every so often — don’t you?” Single, divorced, married, widowed — we all are lonely at times. Also, I wouldn’t want to be in most of the marriages I’ve seen, primarily couples who have been married 30-50 years. Plus, I was never so lonely as when I was married. As a single, I am rarely lonely. Not because I have such an active social life. Just because I guess I like my own company? I have a lot of interests. And I don’t really care what anyone else thinks.

The story says that some single people are more likely to:

  • Visit with neighbors
  • To sign petitions and go to political gatherings
  • Contribute more to the community
  • Be more connected with siblings, nieces and nephews

I think this story may become a Singles Manifesto for many.
