Boomers Being Hired: 5 Companies Embracing What Boomers Have to Offer

Just a few years ago, employment analysts were predicting that massive labor shortages and a crisis of inexperienced leadership would hit around now. But that hasn’t happened. Why not? Baby boomershave come to the rescue – again. They aren’t dropping into retirement – instead, they are staying put in the workforce, determined to keep making the world a better place – or at least, determined to keep their economic independence as long as possible. If you fall into this group, and are searching for an employer who appreciates your maturity, wisdom, and nonquitting work ethic, consider putting these five companies at the top of your search:

  1. First Horizon National Corporation in Memphis, Tennessee. First Horizon has been on the AARP’s list of Best Employers for Workers Over 50 for seven years in a row. The company actively recruits older workers from placement agencies that specialize in older job seekers, and from Senior Services of Memphis. The company offers excellent benefits, including health insurance for part-timers working at least 20 hours per week, tuition reimbursementand other educational opportunities, and an employer-matching 401k program. First Horizon also has a policy of continuing to work with retirees, offering them temporary assignments and consulting work. If you don’t live in Memphis, check out opportunities at financial institutions near you  -  financial companies have a track record of hiring and appreciating older employees.
  2. S.C. Johnson & Son in Racine, Wisconsin. S.C. Johnson has been on the AARP’s list for four years running, and for good reason. Like First Horizon, S.C. Johnson offers very good benefits, including tuition reimbursement, health insurance for part-time workers who work at least 20 hours per week, and an employer-matching 401k program. The company also provides paid time off for caregiving and will reimburse employees for up to $50/night for costs associated with child- or elder-care when an employee is away traveling on business.
  3. Aon Consulting (locations worldwide). Aon, like First Horizon, has been working with placement agencies and websites, such as JobsOver50.com, that actively recruit older workers. Aon has job openings all over the U.S. (and all over the world), offers tuition reimbursement and other personal development opportunities, a matching 401(k) program, and paid and unpaid leaves of absence for various reasons. Aon also has an employee stock purchase program.
  4. MEDecision in Wayne, Pennsylvania. The health care field is full of opportunities for boomers – if you don’t live in Wayne, try exploring other health care-related companies located near you. If you do live near Wayne, consider MEDecision, which recruits through websites that cater to older employees. For the last two years, MEDecision has been named one of the 100 Best Places to Work in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare Magazine and one of the Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania by The Central Penn Business Journal.
  5. Schneider National (locations nationwide). Schneider National is a trucking company that, over the last six years, has committed itself to recruiting older workers. Since becoming a member of the AARP’s National Employer Team – a process that requires employers to be approved based on their hiring practices, benefits and opportunities for advancement – in 2005, Schneider has increased the number of hires over the age of 50 by 42 percent. Trucking, as an industry,is expected to see about 20 percent growth between now and 2015. According to Schneider Vice President of Driver Recruiting, Mike Hinz, the trucking industry as a whole is likely to need between 150,000 and 300,000 new drivers over the next six months. Schneider’s top hiring locations are West Memphis, Arkansas; St. Louis, Missouri; Indianapolis, Indiana; Davenport,Iowa; and Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Since the beginning of the recession, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reports that complaints of age discrimination in hiring have spiked. That’s the bad news. But the bottom line is that baby boomers have a lot to offer that younger employees don’t: better judgment, more experience, lower turnover rates, less absenteeism, and often, more flexibility and interest in learning new skills than younger workers. Don’t let your potential future employers forget that.
