This Weeks Good Reads-Week Eighty-six

Posted: 29 Apr 2011 04:08 AM PDT

coffee cupEvery week I come across an article or two that I find very helpful to me as a Baby Boomer and think may be of some interest to you, the community, as well.

They may be from an online news source, another Blog or Website or something I found surfing around the Internet. They could even be something that was sent in by a reader of the Blog or a member of the Baby Boomer’s Forum.

Enjoy!

Political leaders must face cold, hard facts by (no author given)… It is indeed unfortunate that the political climate on both sides of the fence don’t want to own up to what real people know has to be done. This opinion piece (I wish they listed the author), simply points out some very important facts that seem to be ignored by Washington.

My Dad Un-Friended Me on Facebook — Baby Boomers and Social Media by Meagan Johnson… I don’t know how into Social Media you are, but it seems that most of  us use Facebook and Twitter et al the same way Meagan’s father does. It is a Social site after all. But if you think that it all it is, you may want to rethink how you are using these services.

I  hope you found this weeks choice(s) helpful and enjoyable. What did you think? Do you have any suggestions for next week?

Kentucky Derby Announcer is Too Nervous To Call the Race

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 06:32 AM PDT

I never appreciated before the pressure that certain sports announcers experience on their jobs until I read a New York Times story today about Tom Durkin, the longtime Kentucky Derby announcer who has developed performance anxiety and has given up the job. Here is an excerpt from the New York Times:

Durkin has soldiered through as many as 2,000 races a year for nearly 34 years but has been tormented by the three Triple Crown races that in total span less than seven minutes. "Those three races, though, are like being up to bat with a 3-2 count in Game 7 of the World Series," he said.

Larry Collmus, who will replace Durkin on the NBC telecast, understands the rigors of racing and is about to experience the heightened expectations of national television. "We study the colors and silks for the upcoming races and you get anywhere from 6 to 12 names in your head," said Collmus, who is the announcer at Gulfstream Park in Florida and Monmouth Park in New Jersey. "Accuracy is paramount; lots of people are invested in the horse," Collmus said. "You paint a picture until they get to the wire. Then, they are gone out of my head after five seconds, and a new batch goes in."

People with Attention Spans of ZERO May Be Our Future

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 08:20 AM PDT

I was reading a friend’s post on Facebook about how her students are so attuned to electronics that it’s sometimes difficult to teach them and wondered if teachers should adapt their methods to keep in line with the direction kids are already going. And someone else wrote a very interesting comment:

After spending the last year and half trying to teach “plugged-in” kids, I have such mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, teaching strategies should always be evolving and looking for ways to reach kids. On the other, I see students who can’t focus on one topic for more than a few seconds, who can’t write sentences or spell because they are used to writing only text messages or FB statuses, and who NEVER read anything substantial. If we only try to replicate what they already do outside the classroom, I fear we are condemning them to illiteracy and to a life where they never learn anything they don’t already know.

This commenter exactly described my fears for the future: kids with the attention span of a flea. Illiterate, uninterested in ideas and deeper thoughts, and totally self-centered. Many early ed teachers will tell you, too, that kids do not know how to play with each other anymore or even how to have basic interactions with their peers. Where will our future humanitarians, nurses, and other caring people come from? Where will our inventors and philosophers come from? Scary world.
