How Expensive is Long Term Care?

We were lucky.

Karen’s father had enough money from a few law books he had written and a pension from a major university where he taught to take care of himself in his old age.

Something we found out, with Karen having Power-of-Attorney and doing most of the finances for her father, is how expensive getting old and needing to be taken care of can be. Let me tell ya, it ain’t cheap!

This is a small example of how much it costs, way back in 1995 until 2008 when her father died.

In Karen’s own words

In 1995 at the age of 73, my dad made one of the best decisions he ever made (other than marrying by mother and adopting me). He signed up for an in-home care and extensive care policy with Friends Life Care at Home.

The entry fee at that time was $15,000, more or less a down payment. Each year after that the annual fee was $5,200 with an annual increase each year that depended upon various factors like the cost of living percentage. (The final annual rate when he passed at way at 86 years of age in 2008 was $7,500 per year.)

While dad was still at home and mostly able to fend for himself, F.L.C.@ H. sent caregivers to his house 5 days a week for 4 housrs a day. They would help him shower, cook lunch and dinner for him and did laundry, light housekeeping and food shopping. The payment of $50.00 per hour came direcly out of his account funds.

In 2004 he went into an Assisted Living Facility. The cost for a one bedroom apartment, with a den, living room and kitchenette was $54,000 per year. His “rent” included the apartment, 3 meals a day, changing and washing bed linens and bath towels, weekly cleaning of the apartment as well as the water, heat and electric. He also received care management with medications, wound care, blood pressure and weight checks when necessary.

The account he still had with F.L.C. @ H. continued to pay $85.00 per day toward his rent, it was his money after all and he was still paying for the service. If there was a need for longer care, they would send in their cargivers to take up the slack from the Assisted Living Facility.

Well, that was then and this is now. Everything is more expensive. Since 2oo8, we’ve had a recession, the cost of housing, food, gas and just about eveything else has gone up and the cost of Health Care is in the Stratosphere.

We plan on doing some  serious looking around and doing some serious research to make a decision on how we handle our Long-term health care needs.

How about you?
